Wind Mobile

After approval last week - expect a new cell phone company to launch in Canada very quickly.  They will start in Toronto and Calgary first then expand to other cities including Ottawa in the new year.

Google Phone

The phone is real.  Thousands of Google employees are now roaming the streets.  Plan seems to be that Google will sell the phone directly without a cell phone company as a partner.  Customers would then go and find their own deal.

Bar Codes on Places

Some businesses are now sticking bar codes on their storefront windows.  Customers can use their smartphone to scan the barcode and then get information such as reviews, details of opening times, contact information, prices, links to their website and more.

HP has released the latest version of their all-in-one PC.  The new model features Windows 7 along with a big touchscreen and an internal TV tuner.  The whole thing works well together.  Strange how little use there really is for the touchscreen.  It is so much easier to use the mouse than lifting your hand to the monitor that the touchscreen is rarely used.  A good piece of hardware - but not sure exactly how it would be used.

Samsung launches a new line of desktop monitors that are designed to be green with a unique aesthetic design.  They have really gone the distance to create a green monitor.  This is so green that using it instead of another monitor saves power equial to the planting of four new trees a year.  It looks amazing too, the stand gives the illusion that the screen is floating.  However, the stand needs a lot more height - it all looses its aesthic appeal when it is sitting on a bunch of old phone books.

Changes to YouTube in Korea

The Cyber Defamation Law came into effect on April 1 in Korea.  It requires that users provide their real name and national ID card number.  In response - Google disables uploads and comments from Korea.

Microsoft has released Internet Explorer 8 to the world.  It is an optional download at the moment, but expect it to start showing up as an automatic update in a month or so.  The new browser is schedule to appear at noon Eastern.

The annual CanSecWest conference in Vancouver gives hackers a chance to show their stuff.  This year - the first browser to be hacked was.... Safari on a Mac!  Followed by Internet Explorer 7 and then Firefox.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority threatened to fine an online discussion forum $11,000 a day over a link to a blacklisted website - the website was an anti-abortion site.

Sony does a deal with NBC in the United States that lets you watch TV shows like "The Office" and "Heroes" on your PS3.  Pretty cool stuff and continues to change the way that we think of gaming consoles.  Hopefully it comes up to Canada soon.

3D TV Service Could Start this Year

Sky TV over in the UK announces plans to have a 3D tv station by the end of 2009.  They are already making shows!  One more step to getting 3D TV in our homes.
